BRITISH
Airways (BA) was again the biggest winner at the annual Business Traveller
Awards, hosted recently at the London Hilton Hotel, copping six awards
including the top prize for Best Airline.
The airline also took individual awards for Best Shorthaul Airline, Best
Frequent Flyer Programme, Best First Class, Best Longhaul Airline and Best
Economy Class. Chief executive Willie Walsh collected the awards on behalf
of the airline.
The awards are voted for by readers of the Business Traveller magazine
and for more than 20 years, have been one of the premium awards in business
travel. Best Domestic Train Service and Favourite Luggage Brand were added
this year.
Walsh noted that the company was delighted that readers had voted
overwhelmingly for BA.
"It is an exciting time for us, as we look forward to relaunching our
long-haul business class cabin, Club World, that will see new standards for
business travel and ensure that BA maintains its place at the forefront of
our industry."
One of the first two men to walk on the moon as part of the Apollo 11
mission, astronaut Dr Buzz Aldrin, was this year's guest of honour at the
ceremony and presented the awards, which span 43 categories from hotels and
airlines to car rental and luggage brands.
British Airways is spending £100m on
an aggressive new business class war. The airline hopes that lavishing money
on extra pampering in its premium seats will persuade more executive
passengers to 'fly the flag'.
The revamp, due to be unveiled in London
today, is BA's latest salvo in the most fiercely fought-over sector of the
aviation market.
Other airlines have recently taken airborne comfort to heights undreamed
of when business class was introduced 30 years ago.
Alex McWhirter, consumer editor of Business Traveller magazine, said:
'Business class has never been more luxurious and business class passengers
have never had so much choice.'
BA's revamp of its Club World service has been overseen by style guru
Tyler Brulé, founder of Wallpaper magazine. It will involve the airline
installing more than 5,000 new 'flat bed' seats that are six inches longer
and five inches wider than the current model and which can be adjusted into
a 'Z' position to support the knees and back.
